What smile lines are

Smile lines, also called nasolabial folds, run from the sides of the nose toward the corners of the mouth. Everyone has them to some degree, because they mark where the cheek meets the area around the mouth. They tend to become more noticeable with age as the cheeks lose some volume and support, skin loses firmness and the soft tissue of the mid-face shifts slightly downward.

Filler is one of the treatments commonly discussed for smile lines, and visitors often ask how much product is "normal". There is no single answer, and this guide explains why, along with the factors a doctor considers.

Why the amount of filler varies so much

We do not give fixed amounts, because the right quantity depends on your face and is decided by a doctor after examining you. The main factors include:

  • Depth of the fold. A faint line and a deep crease are very different starting points.
  • The cause of the fold. If the line is deep mainly because the cheek has lost volume, treating the fold directly may not be the best approach. Restoring support higher up in the mid-face is sometimes considered instead.
  • Skin quality. Thin or lax skin may respond differently from thicker, firmer skin.
  • Symmetry. Most people have one side that is deeper than the other, so each side may be treated differently.
  • Your goal. Softening the line is often more natural-looking than trying to erase it. Overfilling smile lines can make the area around the mouth look heavy.
  • Previous treatments. Filler already present from earlier treatments affects how much is appropriate.

A conservative approach is common: treat with a modest amount, let it settle, and review. This tends to produce a more natural result than aiming for maximum correction in one sitting.

Treating the fold versus treating the cause

One of the more important conversations at consultation is whether to place filler in the fold itself or to address the reasons the fold has deepened.

  • Direct fold treatment. Filler is placed along the line to soften the crease. This can work well for moderate, well-defined folds.
  • Mid-face support. Where volume loss in the cheeks is driving the fold, some doctors consider adding support to the cheek area so the fold looks softer indirectly.
  • Collagen-stimulating injectables. Products such as Juvelook or Sculptra work differently from hyaluronic acid filler, encouraging gradual changes in the skin over time. See our collagen booster page.
  • Lifting and skin tightening. When laxity is a major factor, energy-based lifting may be discussed alongside or instead of filler. Our face lifting overview explains these options.

Safety around the smile line area

Smile lines sit close to important blood vessels of the face, including the facial artery and its branches. While serious complications are uncommon, they are a recognised risk of filler in this area.

  • Common effects. Swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps are common and usually settle.
  • Vascular complications. If filler enters or compresses a blood vessel, it can reduce blood flow to the skin. Warning signs include severe pain, pale or dusky skin, and blotchy discolouration. Seek medical help immediately if this happens.
  • Migration or puffiness. Too much product, or product placed in a very mobile area, can sometimes look heavy or uneven.

Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved if needed. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medication, consult a doctor before treatment. Suitability and results vary, and the doctor decides at consultation.

Smile line treatment at Daybeau Clinic Seomyeon

At Daybeau Clinic Seomyeon, fillers, Juvelook, Sculptra and collagen boosters are all quoted after an in-person consultation, because the amount of product varies from person to person. You will know the cost before treatment begins, and payment is made on the day after the consultation confirms the plan.

Some lifting treatments do have listed first-visit prices in KRW, VAT excluded (10% VAT added at payment), checked October 2026. For example, InMode FX full face is 45,000 KRW and Shurink Universe 300 shots is 55,000 KRW. Whether these are appropriate for your smile lines depends on the doctor's assessment. See our price list for details.

Frequently asked questions

Can filler completely remove smile lines?

Smile lines are a natural feature of the face, so complete removal is usually not the aim. Softening them tends to look more natural.

How long does smile line filler last?

It is temporary, and duration varies with the product, the area and your metabolism. Your doctor can give you a realistic expectation for the product used.

Is there downtime?

Many people return to normal activities quickly, but swelling and bruising can occur for a few days. Plan around photos and flights where possible.
