How Long Does Ultherapy Last? Results and Maintenance in Korea

What Ultherapy actually does in the skin

Ultherapy is a focused ultrasound treatment that delivers energy to specific depths beneath the skin surface, including the deeper supportive layer that surgeons lift during a facelift. Instead of working on the surface, it creates tiny heated points below the skin. The body responds to this controlled heating by remodelling and producing new collagen over the following weeks and months.

This is why the question "how long does Ultherapy last?" has two parts. First, how long does it take for results to appear? Second, once they appear, how long do they stay visible? Both answers depend on your skin, your age and how your face changes over time, so a doctor can only give you a personal estimate after examining you.

The timeline: from treatment day to visible change

Many visitors expect an instant lift and are surprised that Ultherapy works gradually. A typical course looks like this:

  • Treatment day. Some people notice a slight tightening straight away, partly from the immediate effect of heat on existing collagen. Mild redness or swelling is common and usually settles quickly.
  • First few weeks. Tenderness, a feeling of tightness or occasional tingling along the jawline can occur. Most people return to normal activities the same day.
  • Around two to three months. This is when new collagen is building, and patients often start to see a firmer jawline or a softer look around the lower face and neck.
  • Several months after treatment. The effect generally continues to develop for some time before reaching its peak.

Because the change is gradual, it is helpful to take photos in the same lighting before your treatment and again a few months later. Small improvements are easy to miss in the mirror.

How long results may last, and why it varies

Ultherapy does not stop ageing. The collagen your body builds after treatment is your own, and it ages with the rest of your skin. Results are commonly discussed in terms of many months rather than weeks, and many patients choose to repeat treatment roughly once a year, but there is no fixed expiry date and no guarantee of how long an individual result will remain visible.

Factors that tend to influence longevity include:

  • Age and skin quality. Skin with more natural elasticity often responds more visibly than very lax skin.
  • Degree of sagging. Mild to moderate laxity is generally a better match than heavy sagging, which may need other approaches.
  • Sun exposure and smoking. Both break down collagen and can shorten the time results appear to last.
  • Weight changes. Significant gain or loss changes facial volume and can alter how the lift looks.
  • Shot count and treatment plan. The number of lines delivered and the areas covered affect how much stimulation each zone receives.

Maintenance options in Korea

Korean clinics often treat lifting as an ongoing plan rather than a single event. After an Ultherapy session, a doctor may suggest one of these maintenance approaches, depending on your skin and schedule:

  • Repeating Ultherapy at intervals. Some patients return around once a year, guided by how their skin looks rather than by the calendar alone.
  • Lighter HIFU between sessions. Devices such as Shurink Universe are often used as a gentler, more frequent top-up.
  • Radiofrequency for skin texture. Treatments like Titanium or ONDA work differently and may be combined in a long-term plan.
  • Skin quality care. Skin boosters and good sun protection support the overall appearance of the skin around a lifting result.

The right combination depends on what bothers you most, whether that is jawline definition, skin texture or fine lines. Your doctor will explain which treatments can be safely spaced together.

Making your result count as a visitor

If you are travelling to Busan, plan your appointment early in your trip so you have time to rest if you feel tender. Bring sunscreen and a hat, and keep a record of the shot count and areas treated so a future doctor can plan from it.

Most importantly, ask your doctor for a realistic picture of what Ultherapy can and cannot do for your face. A good consultation should cover expected changes, possible side effects such as temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or, less commonly, bruising or numbness, and when it makes sense to consider another treatment instead.

Frequently asked questions

When will I see my Ultherapy results?

Some people notice a slight change immediately, but the main effect usually develops over two to three months and can keep improving for some time after that as new collagen forms.

Is one session enough?

Many patients have a single session and then decide on maintenance based on how their skin looks later. Your doctor may suggest a different plan depending on your degree of laxity and goals.

Can I combine Ultherapy with other lifting treatments?

Often yes, but timing and suitability depend on your skin. A doctor will decide whether to combine treatments on the same day or space them out.

Does Ultherapy have downtime?

Most people resume normal activities the same day. Temporary redness, swelling or tenderness are common, and you should contact the clinic if anything feels unusual.
