Two very different ways to change the lips

A lip flip and lip filler are often mentioned together on social media, but they work in completely different ways. Understanding the difference is the quickest way to work out which one, if either, matches the look you have in mind.

  • Lip flip. A small amount of botulinum toxin is placed into the muscle around the mouth, close to the border of the upper lip. Relaxing this muscle slightly allows the upper lip to roll outward a little, showing more of the pink part of the lip. No volume is added.
  • Lip filler. A hyaluronic acid gel is injected into the lips to add volume, define the border or improve symmetry. The change comes from the product itself, so the shape and size are directly altered.

In short, a lip flip changes how the lip sits, while filler changes how much lip there is.

What kind of result each one creates

The visual effect is the main reason to choose one over the other.

  • A subtle lift. A lip flip may suit someone whose upper lip seems to disappear when they smile, or who wants a slightly fuller-looking upper lip without added volume. The change is usually modest.
  • Visible volume. Filler suits people who want lips that are noticeably fuller, or whose lips have thinned over time.
  • Shape and definition. Filler can be used to sharpen the lip border, adjust the Cupid's bow or balance an uneven lip. A lip flip cannot do this.
  • Lower lip changes. A lip flip mainly affects the upper lip. If you want to change the lower lip, filler is the usual option discussed.
  • Gummy smile. Some people want to show less gum when smiling. Toxin in a different area is sometimes considered for this, and a doctor can explain whether it applies to you.

Timing, duration and downtime

The two treatments also differ in how quickly they work and how long they tend to last, which matters if you are visiting Busan for a short time.

  • Onset. A lip flip develops gradually over days as the toxin takes effect. Filler shows an immediate change, although swelling makes the first days look fuller than the final result.
  • Duration. A lip flip is generally short-lived because the lip muscles move constantly. Lip filler usually lasts longer, though duration varies with the product and the person.
  • Downtime. A lip flip typically has very little visible downtime. Lip filler often causes swelling and sometimes bruising for several days, so plan photos and important events accordingly.
  • Function. After a lip flip, some people briefly notice it is harder to drink through a straw, whistle or pronounce certain sounds. This usually settles as the effect wears off.

Safety considerations

Both procedures are injections and both carry risks that should be discussed with a doctor. With a lip flip, too much toxin or uneven placement can make the mouth feel weak or the smile look uneven for a while. With filler, common effects include swelling, bruising and tenderness, and there are less common but serious risks, including injection into a blood vessel. This vascular risk is why lip filler should be performed by a trained doctor who understands facial anatomy. If you notice severe pain, colour changes in the skin or unusual symptoms after filler, contact the clinic or a doctor straight away.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of cold sores, have had previous lip fillers, or take blood-thinning medication. Suitability and results vary, and the doctor decides at consultation which approach is appropriate.

Prices and booking at Daybeau Clinic Seomyeon

At Daybeau Clinic Seomyeon, lip filler is quoted after consultation, because the amount of product varies depending on your lips and goals. A lip flip is not listed as a separate item on our price list, so if you are interested, ask during your consultation whether it is suitable and available, and you will receive a quote then. Listed prices on our price list are first-visit prices in KRW, VAT excluded (10% VAT added at payment), checked October 2026. You can read more about volume options on our lip filler page.

Payment is made on the day of treatment, after the consultation confirms the plan, so you will know the cost before anything is done.

How to decide which suits you

Bring a few reference photos of lip shapes you like, and also ones you do not like. Ask yourself these questions before your appointment:

  • Do I want more volume or just more visible upper lip? Volume points toward filler; a gentle roll points toward a lip flip.
  • How much downtime can I accept? Consider your flight and any events in the days after treatment.
  • How long do I want it to last? A lip flip is a shorter-term option.
  • Is this my first lip treatment? Many first-timers prefer to start conservatively.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lip flip and lip filler be combined?

Some people discuss combining them, but whether this is appropriate depends on your anatomy and goals. A doctor will advise at consultation.

Will a lip flip make my lips bigger?

Not in volume. It can make the upper lip look slightly fuller by showing more of it, but it does not add product to the lip.

Can lip filler be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can usually be dissolved with an enzyme if needed. A doctor decides whether this is appropriate.
