How Many Pico Laser Sessions Are Needed for Pigmentation?

Why there is no single number

One of the most common questions about pico laser is "How many sessions will I need?" The honest answer is that it depends on the type of pigment, how deep it sits, your skin type, and how your skin responds to the first few treatments. A doctor can give you an estimate after examining your skin, but that estimate is usually refined as treatment goes on. Be cautious of any promise that a fixed number of sessions will clear your pigment completely.

It also helps to know what "success" means for your pigment. For a single sun spot, the goal may be clearing it. For melasma, the realistic goal is usually lighter, more even skin that is then maintained. Agreeing on the goal with the doctor at the start makes it easier to judge progress and decide when to stop or switch to maintenance.

Factors that affect the number of sessions

  • Pigment type. Some pigment is a distinct spot, while some is a chronic tendency of the skin. They respond on very different timelines.
  • Depth. Pigment near the surface usually responds sooner than pigment deeper in the dermis.
  • Skin type. Skin that darkens easily is generally treated more gently, which can mean more sessions.
  • Treatment approach. Targeted spot treatment uses higher energy in fewer sessions. Toning uses low energy over a longer series.
  • Sun exposure and triggers. Ongoing sun, heat and hormonal changes can slow progress or cause new pigment.
  • Consistency. Keeping to the recommended interval and following aftercare matter.

General patterns by pigment type

These are general tendencies, not guarantees. Your doctor's assessment takes priority:

  • Sun spots. Well-defined sun spots often respond to targeted treatment in relatively few sessions, sometimes one or two, though some need more.
  • Freckles. Often lighten within a small number of sessions but tend to return with sun exposure.
  • Post-inflammatory marks. May fade over a series of gentle toning sessions, and many also fade slowly on their own with sun protection.
  • Melasma. Usually requires a longer series of low-energy toning sessions, plus ongoing maintenance. It is managed rather than cured.
  • Deeper pigment such as Hori's nevus. Often needs a longer course with sessions spaced further apart.
  • General dullness. Some people notice a brighter tone within a few sessions of toning.

How sessions are spaced

Pico toning is usually done at regular intervals over a course, while targeted spot treatments are typically spaced further apart to let the skin heal and the pigment clear. The doctor sets the interval for you. Treating too often can irritate the skin and, in melasma-prone skin, may cause rebound darkening or patchy lightening. More frequent is not always better.

If you are visiting Busan for a short time, you may only fit in one or two sessions. That can still be a useful start, especially for distinct spots, and the doctor can advise what to continue at home or with a clinic where you live.

Cost per session at Daybeau Clinic Seomyeon

Pico Light Black Toning is KRW 29,000 per session at our clinic. This is a first-visit price, VAT excluded (10% VAT added at payment), checked October 2026, and applies once per new patient per item. Prices for later sessions are confirmed at the clinic. See the full price list and our pico toning page. Payment is made at the clinic on the day, once the consultation has confirmed the plan, so you pay for each session as you go rather than in advance.

How to get the most out of each session

  • Protect from the sun. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplied, plus a hat and shade.
  • Keep skin calm. Avoid scrubs, harsh peels and irritating products during a course.
  • Do not pick. If spots crust after targeted treatment, let them shed naturally.
  • Track progress. Photos in the same light every few weeks help you and the doctor judge change.
  • Share changes. Tell the doctor about new medications, pregnancy, or any darkening after a session.

Common side effects include temporary redness and dryness. Less common ones include rebound darkening and patchy lightening. Results vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Can one pico session remove pigmentation?

Sometimes a single distinct sun spot clears after one session, but most pigment concerns need several. Melasma generally needs a longer course.

When will I see results?

Targeted spots may shed within about a week. Toning results build gradually over a series of sessions.

Do I need maintenance after finishing?

For melasma and freckles, occasional maintenance is common because they tend to return. For sun spots, sun protection is the main maintenance.

What if my pigment gets darker?

Contact the clinic. Temporary darkening can occur, and the doctor may adjust or pause treatment.
